What is “Anmeldung” and why do I need it?

One of the first and most important steps you have to take when moving to Berlin is the “Anmeldung” If you are locating to Berlin for the first time “Anmeldung” is a must!

What does “Anmeldung” mean?

It’s basically registration at the municipality under your address. The anmeldung is a certificate confirming that you are a resident of Berlin. And if you are relocating to Berlin for the first time, you will also get a personal tax number that will allow your employer to pay your salary. If you won’t have this tax number, you will not be able to get your salary legally.

Why register?

The reason why registration is critical to you is first of all because you are required to report and register. Beyond that, the anmeldung will be used in almost every other procedure in the city from opening a bank account to Amazon packages and mail.

How to Register?

The registration will be done at the Bürgeramt, there are a number of different Bürgeramt spread throughout Berlin. The registration will be done in any Bürgeramt you choose, it is highly recommended to make an appointment in advance that will save you a long wait. You can book an appointment in advance on the Internet or alternatively go to Bürgeramt and ask for an appointment for Anmeldung.

You will be asked to bring a passport and a form that includes the address of the apartment, the name of the landlord and his address, the date of entry and exit day, and the names of the persons registering for the apartment. This form is called in German Wohnungsgeberbestätigung (good luck with pronouncing it).

What do I get after registering?

You will receive a signed and original document from the State of Berlin and a document listing your names, your address in Berlin and your birthdays.
